Mikhail Gorbachev can be considered an open-minded person in a few ways. I say this because he actually realized that silencing and not letting citizens of the nation let their ideas out into the open would not lead the nation to the change they needed. The Soviet Union needed economic and social reforms and Gorbachev wasn't going to let censorship get in the way. So, in the year 1985 he introduced a policy called glasnost, which meant openness. With this policy, Gorbachev encouraged people of the nation to let our their ideas about how to make their society better. This new policy lead to good things like the opening of churches and allowing the publication of books by authors who were banned before.

In that same year, Gorbachev introduced another great policy called perestroika, which means economic restructuring. Now that people could speak freely about what they thought about the economy. Party officials would tell farm and factory managers how much to produce and what wages to pay and what prices to charge. In the year 1986, Gorbachev took action. With his help, managers gained more authority over their farms and factories and people could open their own private businesses. Gorbachev introduced another policy called democratization since he knew that, for the economy to stay strong, thee Communist Party had to keep off the Soviet Union a bit. Voters could now vote for who they want to be elected. Because of Gorbachev's thoughtful and effective ideas, the Soviet Union found its way out of Communism. His policies also helped strengthen the economy and society a great deal.

The Collapse of Communism

The reason why Communism collapsed in Eastern Europe and the USSR was because a very large amount of people started to oppose communist governments and President Mikhail Gorbachev wouldn't send Soviet troops to help them out. The wave of reforms and democratic revolutions that took place during the end years of the 80s broke down the Soviet Union. After the old Stalinist government was forced to be taken down, a new president held free elections and gave orders to break down the Berlin Wall, which separated the East and West during the Cold War years, on November 9, 1989.

Due to the encouragement of the rejection of communism in Poland, countries on the Eastern bloc, such as Hungary and East Germany, overthrew their communist leaders. On New Year's Eve in the year of 1991, the USSR, or Soviet Union collapsed. Although the Soviet Union collapsed and countries in Europe overthrew their communist governments, there were still communist governments alive in other places of the world at that time. These places included China, Cuba, North Korea, and Vietnam. These countries allowed economic reforms but still didn't give in to the democratic movements.

Nelson Mandela and Apartheid

Apartheid can simply be defined as segregation. Apartheid was a policy of South Africa during the years 1948 and 1994. Because of this policy, those who weren't white didn't have the same rights as white people. They couldn't vote in elections and, until 1990, they also couldn't do things like use the same bathroom or eat at the same places as white people. People of different races couldn't get married or have any sexual relations. Anyone who was against Apartheid was banned. Those who led campaigns to abolish Apartheid were either killed or harassed.

Nelson Mandela is an African man that was in prison for about 27 years. This still didn't stop him from helping his people get to their freedom. He disliked that Africans couldn't have the same rights as white people and he wanted to do something about it. His sentencing, Rivonia Trial, was seen by others as a cruel tactic by the white South African government to silence Nelson Mandela. Not even their cruel tactic stopped Nelson Mandela from achieving his goal. South Africa finally got their freedom and they couldn't thank Nelson Mandela enough. Nelson Mandela is a very admired man because of what he did for his people. He went through many struggles just to free his people and he never gave up. He never lost hope, not even while he was in prison. Nelson Mandela also became the first black president, which was something very memorable.

African Independence

The most significant reason for why Africa changed so much in the 20 year period between 1955 to 1975 was because most countries had gained independence. In the year 1955, the only African countries that had already gained their independence were Ethiopia, Libya, Egypt, and the Union of South Africa. African countries did not want to be under the colonization of Great Britain after World War II, but imperialists weren't making it easy for them since did things like divided up the continent and stolen their valuable resources. With the help of a few good leaders, many African countries finally became independent. After the year 1975, most African countries were independent.

One of the first countries to finally gain their independence from the British was Ghana. Their leader for independence was Kwame Nkrumah. After World War II, the British started allowing more Africans to be nominated to be on the Legislative Council. The thing was that Africans didn't only want to be nominated, but they wanted to be elected representatives. This was when Kwame Nkrumah came in and led the nonviolent protests against the British. He had many strikes and boycotts and even though he was imprisoned frequently by the British, he still led Ghana to their independence.

Film Lesson: "The Right Stuff"

Recently, our Global 4 class watched a movie called "The Right Stuff". In this movie, The U.S. and the USSR were competing to see who could build the better space program. The U.S. was very determined to have a better space program than the USSR because the USSR had their own successful space program running. After a brave man volunteered and successfully broke the sound barrier while on the X-1, the location where they accomplished this became the place where they tested and experimented with aircraft in the U.S. The U.S. heard that the Soviet Union launched Sputnik, causing them to focus on beating the Soviets in the space race.

The U.S. wanted to find the first astronauts in America to go up into space so they performed all sorts of crazy tests on candidates and those who could endure these tests were chosen. That was the part of the movie that I will remember. I have never seen tests that crazy before. I also did not know that this is what candidates had to go through before fully being able to go into space. I will never forget how many times the U.S. attempted to successfully send of a rocketship. Unfortunately, for the U.S., the Soviet Union beat them in sending astronauts to space. So, the United States had lost the first race. But, soon after, they were competing to see who could be the first to send someone up to the moon. The U.S. had won this race.

NATO and The Warsaw Pact

The North Atlantic Treaty Organizaition, NATO, was an organization that consisted of several countries in North America and Europe. The reason why they wanted this defense alliance was so that if their opponents attacked any of the countries in their alliance all other countries would come and help them. This organization was especially helpful those countries in Western Europe, not only because they were closer to the USSR territory, but also because they were in bad condition after World War I.

The Warsaw Pact was consisdered a response to NATO. Unfortunately for them, the Warsaw Pact was labeled nonexistent in 1991 due to many democratic revolutions that occured over time.

Film Lesson: "Schindler's List"

In our Global 4 class, we watched the movie "Schindler's List". This movie illustrated the Holocaust in a less disturbing manner. The movie also threw in some romance to make the story a bit more interesting, I guess you could say. Although the movie included fictional scenes of the Jews being taken away to the concentration camps and being killed and tortured, it still was not as powerful as "Night and Fog". This does not mean that "Schindler's List" didn't leave me upset and bothered. Something that was powerful to me as a viewer was how the children were roughly taken away from their parents by the Nazis. They would be taken to work at the concentration camps and they were to be tortured if they didn't obey the Nazis that ran the camps.

Another thing in the movie that bothered me was how the children would have to view all this violence happening around them. They probably saw their own neighbors get violently beaten to death. That is something that can be very traumatizing for these children at such a young age. It's sad to know that some of these children didn't live long enough to finally be liberated. These children probably had goals they wanted to achieve in the future and their dreams were crushed just because of cruelty and prejudice. As I said in my previous blog, I believe "Night and Fog" was more powerful than "Schindler's List". Seeing the real stuff has a more powerful effect than a Hollywood version. Most of the scenes in "Schindler's List" will stay in my head for a minimal amount of time, but the many scenes in "Night and Fog" will definitely stay in my head for a larger amount of time, if not as long as I live. Again, I say that the Holocaust is an event in history that I will never forget reading and learning about.

Film Lesson: "Night and Fog"

The Holocaust is an event in history that I will never forget reading and learning about. What happened in those concentration camps was absolutely devastating and tragic. I also think that the Nazis who ran those concentration camps were sick! The scenes and pictures in the documentary "Night and Fog" not only broke my heart but they also caused me to feel furious. It broke my heart because of what these poor Jews had to suffer, especially the children. I can't imagine being taken away from my home all of a sudden one day to be taken to that hell hole. The Jews were tortured and killed just because they were Jewish. It was like they were living in a terrible nightmare. That is wrong on so many levels. This is what made me feel furious. The Nazis killed the prisoners just because they were Jewish. That really bothers me. I cannot believe how heartless and cruel these people were.

In my opinion, "Night and Fog" was definitely a very powerful movie. The scenes of the Nazis beating and killing the Jews is what really made the movie powerful. Compared to the movie "Schindler's List", this movie illustrated the Holocaust more effectively. The reason why is because the scenes and pictures shown are all real and they are also images that I will never forget seeing. The Hollywood version may have been upsetting but the documentary shows you what really happened and what the Jews really suffered. The documentary is all facts while the Hollywood version includes romance and such, like many other Hollywood movies about historical events.

The Treaty of Versailles (ended WWI)

The Treaty of Versailles was signed by Germany and the Allied powers on June 28, 1919. This was the peace treaty that officially ended World War I. The Treaty of Versailles had a very negative effect on Germany. The Treaty of Versailles required that Germany accept sole responsibility for causing the war. They also had to make reparations to members of the Allied forces. Germany suffered the loss of 10% of their land and their overseas colonies away and shared between the Allies. 12.5% of the German population found themselves living outside of the new German borders.

The condition of the German economy went downhill as a result of the produce and profit being sent to the Allies as reparation payments. So, the German economy was unfortunately unable to recover itself. The Germans were also excluded from the league of nations and were enforced to live under other people's rule. This caused them to feel discontent. I don't think this treaty was fair for the Germans because it wasn't completely their fault. Sure, they did some things that may have sparked the beginning of the war but to put all the blame on Germany is just wrong. Other countries were involved in the war.

It is possible that the Treaty of Versailles led to the rise of fascism and Adolf Hitler. Germany was a huge mess after the Treaty of Versailles and Hitler offered to do something constructive about the hurt pride of Germany and he offered a way to lead the country out of shame and out of their bad living conditions. The way Hitler spoke had impressed the Germans and they allowed him to help them through the difficult time. As time went by, Hitler kept rising to the top after taking control of Germany. Maybe this is the reason why historians say that the Treaty of Versailles led to the rise of Hitler.

Mustafa Kemal (Ataturk) and the Modernization of Turkey

Mustafa Kemal Ataturk did certain things to make Turkey more secular. Secular can mean being more worldly and not exactly focusing on religion so much. If you are secular, you are basically non-religious and less spiritual. Mustafa Kemal made reforms in the political, social, legal, economic, and cultural parts of Turkey. The Turkish people were more than happy to accept these reforms into their lives. Before becoming a leader in Turkey, he was a military hero at the Daradanelles in 1915. It was after this that Mustafa became the charismatic leader of the Turkish national liberation struggle in 1919. He was very successful in getting rid of invaders and leading the nation to victory and this led Turkey to their full independence. Because of Mustafa's high achievements, the Ottoman Empire was put to rest and he created the Republic of Turkey in 1923.

Mustafa aimed to modernize Turkey so that they would have a brave new future after going through so much in their past. One reform Mustafa made was that he created a secular system where the vast Muslim majority and the small Christian and Jewish minorities were free to practice their faith. Mustafa had also stressed the importance of the peasants, something that is rarely ever seen. This was something big because the peasants were neglected during the Ottoman times. Mustafa also made other reforms like having European hats relace the fez and having woman stop wearing the veil. Additional reforms included having all citizens take surnames and the Islamic calendar was to stop operating in order for the Western calendar to be moved in. After the cancellation of capitulations, the factors needed to secure a national and liberal economy were achieved. Thanks to Mustafa's reforms, Turkey's economic structure was completely changed for the better.

Film Lesson: "Gandhi"

Mahatma Gandhi was born in 1869 in western India. He is well known for helping India gain independence. Gandhi was not satisfied with the way Indian people were treated by the British. They did not have many rights and this infuriated Gandhi. He decided that it was time for the Indians to stand up against the British. One thing Gandhi and the Indians did was that they refused to buy clothing from the British. Instead they would make their own clothes. Gandhi already made his own clothes by using yarn and a spinning wheel. He would take time out of his day just to this. Gandhi wanted the Indians to do this so that the British sale of clothing would decrease, therefore decreasing their profit along with it.

Gandhi and his followers then went on a 200 mile walk to the coast. When they got to the sea, they began to make salt out of the sea water by collecting it and letting it evaporate. By making their own salt, they wouldn't be buying salt from the British. Gandhi didn't like the idea of violence so he protested peacefully with acts of non violence. Since making their own salt was illegal, many of Gandhi's followers were thrown into jail and were victims of police violence. Even though the police beat them, they refused to defend themselves because of the teachings of Gandhi. Gandhi believed that reacting to situations with violence lead to even more violence. If his followers were involved in acts of violence, he would fast. His followers would immediately stop because they did not want Gandhi to die from starvation.

The Russian Revolution

The Russian Revolution took place in 1917. It was led by Vladimir Lenin. The word revolution means change so obviously the Russians had a revolution because they wanted a change in their nation. The Russian Revolution had taken place during World War I. It was Czar Nicholas II that brought Russia into the war. While the Russians were cold and starving in the years 1916-1917, Nicholas just kept sending troops to war. That is one reason for why people wanted a change in the government. They didn't want to keep starving. That wasn't the worst part. The Russian economy was going downhill at the time. With food shortages, the prices for food went up. This led workers to go on strike so that their wages would increase. In 1917, those who were on strike marched through the streets of Petrograd breaking shop windows and yelling out anti-war slogans. Peasants were also greatly affected because they were already poor.

While the Russians were starving at home, the troops were dying at war. Since Russians weren't equipped with the necessary supplies they needed to fight at war, many troops were dying, getting injured, and getting captured by the enemy. How were they supposed defeat the enemy if their military skills and equipment were lacking? The Russians probably had this in their heads during the Russian Revolution. I don't blame them for deciding to revolt. Nicholas II left the throne in February 1917. This tells us that a main cause of the revolution had to do with the way Russia's condition was politically. Their condition economically wasn't so great either. Vladimir Lenin created the slogan "Peace, Land, and Bread" because he promised Russia these three things. He promised them peace because the Russians weren't at rest. They were fighting World War I for a few years now. Lenin promised them land because having land back then allowed you to be successful. It was essential. Lenin promised Russia bread because, as I said before, they were in a famine, meaning there were food shortages. They were suffering through starvation.

Causes for WWI

World War I broke out in the year 1914. Like all other wars in history, there were reasons for why World War I started. One of those reasons was militarism. Militarism can be defined as the belief that a strong military force is beneficial. During the years before the war, some countries in Europe built large armies and navies and powerful military officers took charge of the civil authorities. The militaries of each country had also planned mobilization during this time as well. Because of these secret battle plans, other countries began to spy on. The results of this were that there was an increase in the hatred and the fear from one country to another. With countries organizing and preparing for war, of course other countries would start to fear you. They would also want to prepare themselves as well while also trying to make sure that their ways of preparing were better than the other country's ways of preparing for war.

Another cause of World War I was nationalism. Nationalism is loyalty and pride for one's own country. Many countries in Europe had a lot of pride in themselves. They believed that they were better than other countries. Germany was one of the countries that showed their pride by making nationalistic speeches and text. When the other countries in Europe heard about this, they wanted to show Germany that they were not better than them. They wanted Germany to lose the feeling of national superiority.

One of the other causes of World War I was the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand on June 28, 1914. He was assassinated during his visit to Sarajevo by a Serbian nationalist. This had angered the people of Austria-Hungary because Ferdinand was the heir to the Austrian throne. They considered the assassination an open attack from Serbia. Now Austria wanted to make sure that Serbia was no longer a threat to Austria, but they knew that if they were to start a war with Serbia, they would need the support of Germany. Germany agreed to help Austria because they believed that Austria was an ally of Germany.

Opium Wars-Imperialism in China

The Opium Wars took place during the mid 1800s between the British and the Chinese because of the illegal trade of opium, hence the name Opium Wars. Opium was a drug originally used for medical reasons. But, after the British introduced the idea of mixing opium with tobacco so that it could be smoked, people started to become addicted to the substance. Because of this addiction, the British made a lot of profit from selling opium. We know that people who use drugs too much often suffer the consequences. Those who used opium felt the effects of using it so much and China's population became weak. The Chinese government noticed opium's bad effect on the Chinese people and decided that they would not allow opium to be sold for smoking. Those who were caught going against this would be punished by being banned or executed.

Despite this new rule, the British continued to bring in more opium to China. They bribed government officials, who were corrupt, and managed to bring them into the illegal opium trade. The Chinese government discovered that there was still an illegal opium trade taking place and didn't do much about it for a while. Eventually, the Chinese government decided to make an effort to stop this madness by having government officials destroy any opium being imported into their land. The British wanted to stick up for their trade rights and decided to take action by taking their places in Canton, the trading port by which the opium was being imported into China. This was when the Opium War officially started. The British had won this war because they were more technologically advanced and also because their military was stronger than China's military, which was corrupt.

Film Lesson: "Mountain of the Moon"

Recently in our Global 3 class, we watched a movie called "Mountains of the Moon" featuring Richard Burton and John Speke. While these two men explored Africa, they experienced many hardships, just like many other Europeans at that time. In Africa, diseases caused by mosquitoes, like malaria, were very common. This is why Burton and Speke were shown sleeping with mosquito or insect guards over them. There was one scene in the movie where John Speke was sleeping without a guard to protect him from the insects. This caused a beetle to crawl into his ear. They had to drop hot wax into Speke's ear and soon after Speke jammed a spear into his ear. Another hardship faced by these two men in Africa was when they entered a different territory. In one of the scenes of the movie, Burton and Speke entered the territory of a group of "colorful" Africans. They told the men that they could not enter their territory without bringing them gifts. In some cases in history, people have gotten into battles because one person entered a different territory without the permission of its owner.

Burton and Speke came across a body of water. They named this body of water Lake Victoria, after the Queen of England. This is very strange because they named a lake after the Queen of England and this lake is located in Africa. It would make more sense if they named a body of water in England after the Queen of England or if they named that body of water they encountered in Africa after an African leader. The movie had a scene where one of the two men took out a gun and threaten one of the Africans. The Africans appear to have not known what this object was. This is one of the primary technological advantages that Europeans had over Africans during this time. Europeans were more updated with their weapons. Europeans were eventually able to conquer Africa so easily not only because they were more advanced in their technology but because they were also more united than the Africans. The African people had different tribes who would occasionally end up in a battle with each other for land most of the time. Europeans, on the other hand, worked together and were more united. With teamwork, of course you can wipe out the other team.

Imperialism Project

Over the past couple of days, our Global 3 class has been working on an Imperialism project because we are currently working on the Imperialism unit. We completed this project so that our class could see the effects of imperialism. Imperialism is when a powerful country or nation takes over another foreign territory. For this project, we attached things like cotton, tea, gold, and products related to that onto the project map. We also drew shipping lines on the map to show the trade routes of some of the countries. For example, England needed cotton to make more clothing in their factories, especially since there was an increase in demand for clothing. They discovered that India had cotton in their country so they decided to sail to their country to get the goods they needed.

For this project we also colored in countries, not only because our teacher wanted the paper to look pretty, but to show which countries took over which territories. My partner and I learned that England took over places like Canada, Eastern United States, and many countries in Africa. There was a slave trade between the New World and Africa during this time as well. Spain took over many countries in South America and a few countries in the Caribbean. This can explain why many countries in South America and in the Caribbean speak Spanish today. This project helped us learn that European countries participated the most in imperialism.

Karl Marx and Communism

Communism is basically a system that has a goal to get rid of private ownership and to also get rid of the classes of a society. Karl Marx was not happy with the Industrial Revolution. He believed that it was wrong how the factory owners would most of the money while the factory workers worked long, exhausting hours and got paid a low amount of money. Karl Marx's idea of communism was pretty much the same as the definition I provided above. He wanted everyone to share equal wealth, not one person to be paid more than the other just because of their position in the classes of the society.

Karl Marx wanted communism to take over the world because he believes that history has been a series of class struggles, mainly between the working class and the owners of the capital. The owners of the capital would be having all the fun while the working class would work these long hours with only a short period of time for food. This is why Karl Marx saw the owners of the factories as the 'bad guys' and the factory workers as the 'good guys'. He predicted that the 'good guys' would stand up for themselves and try to overthrow the 'bad guys' so that they could try to make a change of the situation.

Karl Marx and the Industrial Revolution

Due to the poor treatment of workers in Europe, Karl Marx wasn't seen as a big fan of the Industrial Revolution. Women and children had to be sent out to work in factories just so that they could support their families since they were poor. They had no other choice after being struck with poverty. Factory owners liked that children were available to work because they were easier to control. The heartbreaking thing was that they were controlled by being violently beaten so that they could follow orders. Children were used to get coal from unsafe places in the mines and since they had small hands they would be ordered to reach into parts of machines. Sometimes young workers were forced to work eighteen hours a day, which didn't leave a fair amount of time for a much needed rest. Workers in a factory weren't even paid a well amount of money.

This is the reason why Karl Marx believed that factory workers should control the factories instead of the landlords. Maybe that way conditions wouldn't be so unjust. Karl Marx wanted workers to become one and go against their factory owners instead of keeping quiet and continuing to be treated unfairly. Factory owners lived the good life, something they did not deserve. It is the main reason why the Industrial Revolution inspired Karl Marx to invent Communism. Communism is basically the idea that people share the same wealth in a society. Communism wasn't all that good, though. These types of governments were strict and dictatorial. Workers would be forced to work on massive pieces of farmland. Those who wanted to print news stories criticizing the government weren't allowed to. If they decided to go against the Soviet government, they would suffer the harsh consequences.

Nationalism and the Creation of Italy

Nationalism is basically showing that you belong to your country and showing that you have loyalty to your country by showing your support in different ways. I am nationalistic because I celebrate the 4th of July, which is Independence Day for the U.S. I also use my country's currency, which is the dollar, and I also support the troops that fight for my country. If my country would go against another country in the Olympics, for example, I would most likely root for my country.

Nationalism can bring people together by making them feel connected. In my country, we feel connected because the troops fighting in a war right now are fighting for our country. Nationalism was used to create the nation of Italy. This happened in the early 1800s when people from Italy became interested in the traditions and culture of Italy. After the French Revolution, people in Italy also thought that they also need equality and freedom. Before Italy was the Italy we see it as today, it was made of small kingdoms. Most of Italy was controlled by Austria while the remaining land was separated into nations. Italy became its own country after many battles with Austria. Just like our country wanted independence from Great Britain, Italy wanted to fight so that they could be independent from Austria.

Simon Bolivar and Latin American Revolutions

Simon Bolivar, born in Caracas, Venezuela on July 24,1783, was a South American general. He was actually considered one of South America's greatest generals. When he was young, he was sent to Europe to go to school in Spain. Soon after, he returned to Venezuela and got married. Unfortunately, though, his wife died shortly after their wedding. Bolivar went back to Europe and then traveled to United States, which had just won its independence from Great Britain. When Bolivar went back to Venezuela, he decided that it was time for his country to be independent from Spain.

In 1810, Bolivar joined a group of men that captured Caracas and the announcement of independence from Spain was made later on. But, Spain did not want to give up the land so they attacked Bolivar and his men, resulting in one of his men surrendering. Bolivar traveled to New Granada, which is the country Colombia today, and wrote Cartagena Manifesto. In Cartagena Manifesto, Bolivar said that New Granada should help him in his quest for Venezuela's independence because they both want the same thing and Venezuela's freedom would protect the freedom of New Granada. After receiving help from New Granada, Bolivar invaded Venezuela in 1813.

Bolivar was forced to go back to New Granada by the Spaniards. In 1815, Bolivar traveled to Haiti and managed to convince their president to help him on his quest. A couple of years later Bolivar went back to South America to continue his quest. Bolivar and his army won the Battle of Boyaca in 1819 and in that same year he created the Angostura Congress, which founded Gran Colombia, and Bolivar was named president. After another battle in 1822, northern South America was finally liberated. But, that was only the northern part. Bolivar and his army then prepared to march through the Andes Mountains to liberate Peru. In 1823, Bolivar was given the role to invade Peru and soon after he was given the role he arrive in Lima to plan the attack.

Finally, in 1824, Bolivar and his army defeated the Spanish army in a few more battles to finally remove the Spaniards from South America. The Republic of Bolivia was created in the Congress of Upper Peru in honor of Bolivar, since Peru had become a separate state. Without Bolivar's determination and perseverance, Bolivia might have never existed. He wanted to defeat the Spanish and gain independence from Spain and he did.

John Locke And "The Enlightenment"

John Locke's ideas during The Enlightenment are very similar to what Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Constitution because he had a great influence on Thomas Jefferson when he was writing the Constitution. The "rights" that Thomas Jefferson talks about in the Constitution include life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. He is trying to say that everyone is created equally so, therefore, they should be able to have the same freedom as others in their nation and they should be able to live their lives how they choose to, with no one forcing them to do things that they don't want to. People in the nation should have equal rights, no one should have more rights than others and they also shouldn't have less rights then others as well. According to the Declaration of Independence, the governments power comes from the people of the nation. This could mean that the people of the nation have the right to change or get rid of the government if they thought the government was doing very bad. They would then set up a new and more improved form of government.

Copernicus and the trial of Galileo

The heliocentric theory is basically the theory that the Sun is the center of the universe and all planets revolve around it. On the other hand, the geocentric theory is the theory that the Earth is the center of the universe and all planets revolve around it. The geocentric theory came first. After the Scientific Revolution, scientists began thinking about science more. Soon after, they developed many advanced math and science skills. With these skills they were able to figure out that Earth was not, in fact, the center of the universe. It was the Sun that planets revolved around. So, therefore, the correct theory is heliocentrism.

Galileo Galilei faced trial in 1633. The Catholic church had put him on trial because he had written in his book his idea that the planets did not revolve around the Sun. He wrote that the planets revolved around the Sun, not the Earth. He had gotten the idea of heliocentrism from Copernicus. The Catholic church believed in geocentrism because of the Bible and Galileo believed in heliocentrism because of science and his studies. The Catholic church was very big and powerful during those ancient times. Since Galileo had disagreed with the teachings of the Bible, he was immediately looked down on by people of the Church. The people of the Church had also thought he was disrespecting God and the Bible for disagreeing.

Scientific Revolution: The Scientific Method

The Scientific Revolution started after people thought of new ways of thinking about ideas of science. One of these ideas was from the ancient Greeks and Christians back during that time. They believe that our planet earth was the center of the universe and that the sun and planets each revolved around it. Scientists would try to prove or disprove each other by experimenting. They would test theories over and over. During the Scientific Revolution, scientists came up with more theories and did more testing as time went by. The ideas of science became more clear to them by doing this.

The scientific method has multiple steps. It is used when someone is trying to prove something by doing an experiment. Many people, including scientists, use this method when they want to test something. Some of the first people to use this were scientists during the Scientific Revolution. In order to use the scientific method, you must think of what you want to test first. A scientist named Galileo supposedly used this method when he stood on the Leaning Tower of Pisa to prove that two objects can fall at the same speed despite their weight differences. This can be an example of an experiment using the scientific method. Galileo started with his theory that two objects can fall at the same speed even though their weights are different. He had his hypothesis. He then tested over and over and disproved those who believed that two objects can't fall at the same speed if they have different weights. The scientific method starts with a theory. You would have to make observations with the information you already have about your theory. Then, you would make predictions and form an educated guess, or a hypothesis. The hypothesis would be what you think will happen when doing the tests and why. Next, you would experiment to test your hypothesis. Finally, you would observe what happens and see if your hypothesis was correct or not.

Evolution Vs. Creation

According to Darwin's Theory of Evolution, humans, animals, and all other living things have evolved from living things that have lived in the past over the last several years. The reason why we see the changes in the appearance of these living things is because of natural selection. Natural selection is when a species has traits used to their advantage. For example, a polar bear has thick fur to keep it warm since it lives in the arctic regions. With these traits, the polar bear can survive the environment it lives in. But, if it didn't have these traits it would not survive. Many years ago some species might have had traits that wouldn't allow them to survive and therefore they weren't able to move on. A living organism from the species could have grown new traits that they pass on to their offspring that would allow them to live on.
Many other people may believe in Creationism. It is most common for religious people to believe in Creationism. Creationism is the belief that man and the world was made by God, or some other person with such power. People who believe in Christianity or any religion similar to that may think that God created Adam and Eve first. After creating them, it all moved on from there and soon humans and animals walked the Earth. Other religions believe something different. They have their own story.
After learning more about evolution and Creationism, I'm not sure which one I want to believe in. However, I grew up believing in Creationism. At the age where I started asking questions about life, which was around the age 5 or 6, my parents answered telling me that God had created life. So those answers remained in my head.
